Serie A: Como Visit is a Must-Win for Milan

AC Milan vs Como

Scudetto chasers AC Milan can keep their slim hopes of chasing down Serie A leaders Inter Milan when they play their game in hand, against Como, on Wednesday.

Currently second in the Serie A table, eight points behind I Nerazzurri and with this game to play, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have been on a strong run of form, and they really need to keep that run rolling when they take on Cesc Fabregas’ Como at the San Siro Stadium.

I Biancoblu are currently seventh and pushing for a European place, but a run of two wins from the last six league games has taken the wind from their sails. Meanwhile, I Rossoneri beat Pisa on Friday night, thanks to a late Luka Modric goal, and that result crucially kept them in the hunt.

Como fell at home to Fiorentina at the weekend and they will want to bounce back on Wednesday; and the visitors have another incentive when they head to the San Siro, as two goals from Adrien Rabiot and a third from Christopher Nkunku gave Milan a 3-1 win in Como just a month ago.

Talking Points

Rabiot out for Milan

While the chase for the top four in Serie A is bubbling up nicely, Milan still have their eyes on the main prize and they scrapped out a 2-1 win over lowly Pisa thanks to Modric’s late strike. But Allegri has a rather unnecessary problem to solve in midfield after his French star Adrien Rabiot picked up a late red card. The enigmatic artist managed to collect two yellow cards within 20 seconds of madness; the first for a clumsy foul and the second for a daft dissent.

Though this is by no means ideal, Allegri has options to replace Rabiot for this clash, the most likely candidate being former Torino star Samuele Ricci. The 24-year-old brings maturity and innovation to his game, going about his business without fuss and, as a superb ball-player with fine distribution skills he will happily sit alongside Modric and Youssouf Fofana in a midfield trio.

Milan have a formidable back line marshalled by England star Fikayo Tomori and with skipper Mike Maignan as the last line of defence; and they pack a punch up front with Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao on eight and seven goals for the campaign.

Is Como’s ethos style over substance?

As a manager Fabregas has tried to mould his squad into the image of the great footballing teams he played for, notably Barcelona and Arsenal. And he has been backed by the club’s owners with some notable recruits, some with experience at the very top of the game, such as captain Sergi Roberto and striker Alvaro Morata, on loan from Milan.

Como have won plaudits for their style of play and, while their Serie A 2026 results have not been at top six levels in recent weeks, their fans seem to be happy to criticise those who have been more successful, unfurling a banner on Saturday which read: ‘One day with Fabregas is better than 100 with Allegri.’

Como will be without Alvaro Morata for their upcoming Serie A match against AC Milan

Well, they may think that now; but if Milan collect their 20th Serie A title any time soon the Como fans might think again. And they are facing a team with some of the best football artists in the game, such as Pulisic and Croatia legend Modric, so Como doesn’t have the monopoly on playing the beautiful game.

And, before falling to La Viola, Como played out two draws, against Napoli and Atalanta, scoring just one goal.

Fabregas saw the uglier side of football as his team crashed at home to Fiorentina on Saturday as Morata was sent off late in the game, prompting the manager to say: “Those who can’t live with it should play another sport.”

They have plenty to say for themselves at Como…but can they deliver on the pitch when it matters?

History

Milan have won their last four meetings with Como, winning 3-1 in Lombardy in January and 2-1 at the San Siro last season.

With three wins, two draws and one defeat, in all competitions, Como have been fairly strong until their weekend loss, while Milan remains in fine form with four wins and two draws.

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2026 betting odds say Milan’s title hopes are hanging by a thread, but a win on Wednesday would reduce the gap at the top to five points and then it gets more interesting.

Como are at SBOTOP odds of 3.05 to win and the draw is at 3.24; but I don’t see anything other than a Milan victory.
