Premier League: Fulham are Brimming With Confidence Ahead of Villa Visit

Aston Villa vs Fulham

After three consecutive wins against Leeds United (1-0), Brentford (3-1), and Cambridge United (1-0) in the EFL Cup third round, Fulham will stake their unbeaten run when they visit Aston Villa for their next Premier League contest this Sunday afternoon.

Because of their winning streak, the Cottagers rose to eighth in the English top-flight standings with eight points. On the other hand, the Villans are surprisingly in the relegation zone with only three points after the first five matchdays.

Aston Villa are in 18th place because they have yet to win a league game this season. However, Unai Emery’s men have notched back-to-back draws against Everton (0-0) and Sunderland (1-1) before winning 1-0 against Bologna in the Europa League.

Talking Points

Breaking their scoring drought is not enough for Aston Villa

Aston Villa have yet to win in the Premier League this season
Aston Villa’s Matty Cash battles with Sunderland’s Enzo Le Fée during a Premier League match

Aston Villa scored their first goal of the Premier League season against Sunderland, as Matty Cash fired a superb volley in the 67th minute. However, the Villans couldn’t fully exploit the 10-man Sunderland, as Wilson Isidor scored the equaliser eight minutes later. Head coach Unai Emery was pissed at his team dropping points, calling them “lazy” after the match.

After Emery’s harsh assessment, Aston Villa responded with a much-needed 1-0 win over Bologna to kick off their Europa League campaign. Team captain John McGinn scored the marginal goal early in the first half with a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area. Emery’s men hope to build off that with a win against Fulham.

The Villans will continue to miss the services of Youri Tielemans (leg), Ross Barkley (personal), and Amadou Onana (hamstring). Ollie Watkins’ goal drought has stretched to 10 matches, so expect the English international to be ultra-aggressive when he’s reinstated in the starting XI against the Cottagers.

Meanwhile, Emery will surely want more from summer signings Jadon Sancho, Harvey Elliott, and Evann Guessand. The trio has yet to make an impact for the Villans with 239 Premier League minutes between them thus far.

Fulham inspired by Iwobi’s resilience

Fulham recently secured a 3-1 win over Brentford, as Alex Iwobi inspired the team to rally from one goal down. After Mikkel Damsgaard found the back of the net for the Bees following Josh King’s error, Iwobi consoled King and scored the equaliser during the 38th minute when the Bees failed to clear the ball. Two minutes later, Iwobi wonderfully teed up Harry Wilson in transition to put the Cottagers up 2-1.

There was more carnage in the second half, as Ethan Pinnock scored an own goal in the 50th minute after he headed in Ryan Sessegnon’s cross. Rodrigo Muniz would’ve made it 4-1 if the referees didn’t wave off his goal near the hour mark.

As it turns out, Iwobi had been nursing an ankle injury. However, the Nigerian winger should be ready to go against the Villans as he took the day off against Cambridge United last Wednesday.

History

Aston Villa have won seven of their last eight Premier League matches against Fulham, including their last five in a row since a 2-0 defeat in October 2022. If they win again this weekend, the Villans will have won six consecutive league meetings against any side for the first time since doing so against Birmingham City from October 2005 to April 2010.

However, the Villans have yet to score in each of their last two home Premier League matches, and the last time they were held scoreless in three consecutive Premier League matches at Villa Park was in January 2015.

Fulham plan to record three consecutive wins for the first time since December and January in the 2022-23 campaign. But they’ve only won one of their last 21 away league matches at Villa Park (D7, L13).

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Premier League 2025 odds expect an all-out battle at Villa Park. Despite being in poorer recent form, Aston Villa have a slight edge at 2.31 odds, whereas Fulham aren’t far behind at 2.97, and a draw is at 3.01 in the 1X2 market.

With both sides having found the back of the net in their recent games, they should be able to create new Premier League 2025 highlights this weekend, hence our recommended bet. Bettors can also add Over 2.00 at 1.55, Over 2.25 at 1.90, and Over 2.50 at 2.13 to the parlay. Moreover, a Correct Score of 1-0 in favour of the Villans – the result of their most recent league matchup – is on offer at 6.70 your bet.
