Bundesliga: Red Bulls Must be Wary of the Streaking Foals

RB Leipzig’s unlikely pursuit of the top Bundesliga spot faces a sizeable roadblock, as Ole Werner’s men will visit an improved Borussia Monchengladbach team on Friday night at Borussia-Park.

After what happened in the past two matchdays, the Red Bulls suddenly find themselves second in the German top-flight standings with 25 points, six points adrift of defending champions Bayern Munich. They are coming off a 2-0 win against Werder Bremen, and getting their second consecutive win will surely help their cause, especially if Bayern Munich somehow drop points against FC St. Pauli this weekend.

Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach made a considerable rise in the standings after a sluggish start. After stringing together three straight wins, Eugen Polanski’s men are now the 12th seed with 12 points. They recently won 3-0 against relegation-threatened Heidenheim.

Gladbach are picking up steam under Polanski

Borussia Monchengladbach had to change managers, following 10 Bundesliga matches without a win, and Eugen Polanski was hired on an interim basis. His first match as a manager was a 1-1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, the Foals have won three, drawn one, and lost three.

Last week, the Foals decided to keep Polanski by signing him to a permanent deal, and he celebrated his new arrangement with an emphatic display against Heidenheim last time out, extending their winning run to three matches. The Foals are the only team in the Bundesliga to have taken maximum points from the last three matchdays. During this stretch, they have had a goal difference of +9 (10 goals scored, two conceded).

Haris Tabakovic has been instrumental in Borussia Monchengladbach’s recent stretch of Bundesliga 2025 results, as the 31-year-old striker moved up to third in the Bundesliga Golden Boot race with seven goals, leapfrogging Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.

RB Leipzig out to extend winning run at home

RB Leipzig have yet to drop points at the Red Bull Arena with five wins from five. However, on the road, they’ve dropped points in one draw and two losses. They have never lost at home to Borussia Monchengladbach (W5, D4), but have lost four of the last five away matches against them.

The Foals’ backline is in for a long day, as the Red Bulls have multiple threats in the final third. Christoph Baumgartner is the team’s most dangerous attacker, with five goals and three assists. Romulo Cardoso has four goals, and Yan Diomande, Assan Ouedraogo, and Johan Bakayoko have three, three, and two goals, respectively.

History

Borussia Monchengladbach went unbeaten in their league meetings with RB Leipzig last term. After a goalless draw at the Red Bull Arena last November 2024, the Foals won 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Borussia-Park, as former striker Alassane Plea struck before the hour mark last March. Before this, the Red Bulls had a three-game winning streak over the Foals.

Both teams finished outside of the European football places last season, with RB Leipzig in seventh and Borussia Monchengladbach in 10th. For the first time since their debut Bundesliga campaign in 2016-17, the Red Bulls didn’t qualify for Europe. Since then, they have changed coaches. RB Leipzig appointed Ole Werner, and Borussia Monchengladbach replaced Gerardo Seoane with Eugen Polanski a few weeks ago.
