Bundesliga: Bayern and BVB Need Der Klassiker Boost

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund

It’s back to Bundesliga matters for Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund when these two proud sides meet for another Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena this Saturday evening. After what happened earlier this week, both teams aim to win this game to boost their confidence. Bayern Munich suffered a 2-1 first-leg loss against Inter Milan, and Borussia Dortmund were walloped 4-0 by Barcelona, putting their Champions League hopes in jeopardy.

At least for Bayern Munich, they’re in pole position to reclaim the Meisterschale. Vincent Kompany’s men are at the top of the German top-flight standings with 68 points and have a six-point cushion over second-seeded Bayer Leverkusen. They’re also unbeaten in their last three league matches.

On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund are fighting for a European football berth. Niko Kovac’s side is eighth in the table with 41 points, though they’re on a two-game winning streak.

Talking Points

Muller’s last dance with Bayern Munich

Thomas Muller recently announced he will depart Bayern Munich this summer when his contract expires to mark the end of his 25-year tenure with the Bavarian giants. The 35-year-old holds the record for the most appearances in Bayern Munich’s history with 743 matches, and he also ranks third on the club’s all-time scoring list with 247 goals.

Muller is also expected to play in his final Der Klassiker this Saturday for his 29th appearance (a joint record with Mats Hummels). However, it remains to be seen whether he’ll start or come off the bench.

He came off the bench against Inter Milan and made an immediate impact. Muller replaced Leroy Sane in the 74th minute and scored the equaliser, but the team conceded a late goal from Davide Frattesi.

Raphael Guerreiro would likely draw another start if Vincent Kompany keeps Muller on the bench since Jamal Musiala is doubtful for this match. Serge Gnabry is another option to reinforce their attack with Leroy Sane, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane.

Furthermore, Bayern Munich will need another solid shift from Jonas Urbig between the sticks. The 21-year-old has grown steadily in his past seven appearances across all competitions and is tipped as the potential successor of Manuel Neuer.

Adeyemi finding consistency with Borussia Dortmund

Niko Kovac has found success with the front duo of Karim Adeyemi and Maximilian Beier, so don’t be surprised if he starts them together again versus the league leaders.

Adeyemi had been in and out of the starting lineup before Kovac arrived. But, since he received the starting nod, the 23-year-old winger had two goal contributions in BVB’s back-to-back wins against Mainz (3-1) and SC Freiburg (4-1). He and Beier have 11 league goals and nine assists this season.

Having Serhou Guirassy (15 league goals) coming off the bench is never a bad idea for Borussia Dortmund. Moreover, Kovac has Jamie Gittens, Gio Reyna, Julien Duranville, and Carney Chukwuemeka as additional attacking options.

BVB’s defence will be put to the test since Nico Schlotterbeck is ruled out for six months due to a knee injury.

History

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw during their reverse fixture at Signal Iduna Park last November, as Jamie Gittens and Jamal Musiala were on the scoresheet. This weekend marks the 137th meeting between these two sides since the Bundesliga was founded.

Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in their last four Bundesliga matches against league leaders (W1, D3), the longest such run of all German top-flight teams and BVB’s longest since a five-game stretch from 2009 to 2013.

68 points after the first 28 matchdays represent Bayern Munich’s best Bundesliga campaign in seven years (69 points in 2017-18). All seven teams that have done this went on to win the Meisterschale. However, they are winless in consecutive matches against BVB for the first time since 2017 (D1, L1).

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds predict a lopsided Der Klassiker this weekend. Bayern Munich are 1.37 favourites to win, whereas Borussia Dortmund are huge 6.00 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.79 in the 1X2 market. Die Bayern’s Asian Handicap offers include -1.25 at 1.82, -1.50 at 2.09, and -1.75 at 2.35.

Besides going for a home win for Die Bayern, SBOTOP football fans can expect these two sides to put up new Bundesliga 2025 highlights, hence our recommended bet. If you’re swinging for the fences, check out alternatives like Over 3.25 at 1.78, Over 3.50 at 2.03, or Over 3.75 at 2.29. Meanwhile, a Correct Score of 1-1 – the result of the reverse fixture – is pegged at 10.00 your bet.
