Champions League: Los Blancos Test for the Ragged Reds

Liverpool vs Real Madrid

Arne Slot’s Liverpool hope to make it back to back wins on Tuesday when Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid visit Anfield for a Champions League blockbuster.

Liverpool ended a four match losing sequence in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, while Real Madrid come into the game on the back of a 4-0 hammering of Valencia. But the Reds weren’t entirely convincing against the Villans and the 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last week was a sixth loss in seven matches in all competitions.

The one bright note in that desperate run was a 5-1 hammering of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League and Slot will hope that another magical night, under the floodlights at Anfield, is on the cards.

But the Reds are due to meet a team in an entirely different frame of mind.

Real Madrid are riding high at the top of the Primera Division and have won all three of their Champions League games so far, beating Juventus in Round Three; but the Champions League 2025 betting odds reckon there isn’t much to choose between these two sides, both expected to go deep into the competition.

Talking Points

Can Reds build on Villa win?

Liverpool received a huge helping hand to end their four match losing run in the Premier League. Aston Villa have been in superb form in recent weeks, and they threatened to go ahead at Anfield, Morgan Rogers crashing a first half shot against the upright. Both Liverpool goals had a touch of fortune and the first, Mo Salah’s 250th goal for the Reds, was down to some comical Villa defending.

The English top flight has seen more teams going long this season and there has been a return of the long throw at every club. But Unai Emery’s Villa insisted on playing out from the back and when keeper Emi Martinez looked for Pau Torres, the Spanish centre back slipped and the Egyptian King stole in to score. It was also Salah’s 276th Premier League goal involvements, equalling the record for a single club, set by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.

Champions League: Mohamed Salah recently scored his 250th goal for Liverpool

Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, on his return to the side, scored the second with the help of a deflection; but a win’s a win; and this hard earned victory actually took Liverpool up to third in the Premier League table, with Manchester City set to play on Sunday. And Slot’s men are just below the play-off line in the Champions League table with six points. So, despite enduring a shocking six weeks, nothing, as yet, has been lost…apart from a Carabao Cup place.

Mbappe and Bellingham are on fire

Liverpool have plenty of quality in their line-up but their opponents are on a different level at the moment. Alonso’s Real edged out Juventus in a tight affair last time in the Champions League out but since then they have tightened their grip on the La Liga title race by beating Barcelona 2-1 in El Clasico, and then Los Blancos went seven points clear at the top of the La Liga table thanks to their resounding victory over Valencia.

Kylian Mbappe had mixed emotions in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu. While he performed consistently well for Los Blancos the club was pot-less, and looked imbalanced at times. This season the French star is flying and so is his club. With 13 goals and two assists he leads the race for the Golden Boot by six clear goals, ahead of Atletico’s Julian Alvarez. And Mbappe has made a stack of Champions League 2025 highlights too, joint top scoring on five with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. He bagged against both Barca and Valencia and so did a resurgent Jude Bellingham who looks back to his best in an advanced midfield role.

History

These two juggernauts have collided 12 times in the UEFA Champions League and Los Blancos have had the better of the results with seven wins to Liverpool’s four, and there has been just one draw, a goalless stalemate in the second leg of the 2020/21 competition.

They met last year in Round Six of the league stage and Liverpool won 2-0 at Anfield, but Real Madrid had won the three previous encounters.

With six wins from six Los Blancos’ recent form has been much stronger than their hosts who have won two and lost four in all competitions.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP odds can’t split these two teams with Liverpool at 2.50, Real Madrid at 2.50 and the Draw at 3.80. If there is to be a winner I’d go for the Spaniards, but I am more confident that there will be goals, and at least a couple before the half time break.
