Serie A: Roma is a Serious Test of Inter’s Title Hopes

Inter Milan vs AS Roma

The 2025 Serie A title race is gathering pace and, with just five games left to play, Inter Milan and Napoli are neck-and-neck at the top of the table, locked on 71 points and seven clear of third placed Atalanta.

And the clash of this weekend is in Milan, where I Nerazzurri welcome Roma, currently motoring on in seventh place and just three points behind the top four. Simone Inzaghi’s Inter have suffered a bad week, losing 1-0 away to Bologna in the league last weekend and taking a 3-0 slapping in the Coppa Italia semi-final at the hands of AC Milan.

Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri’s Roma are unbeaten in five with three wins, including a 1-0 victory at home to Hellas Verona last time out, and this is probably a good time for I Giallorossi to take on title-chasing Inter Milan.

Talking Points

Can Inter refuel in time?

Inzaghi’s Inter have been the favourites to win the Scudetto all year, with the Serie A 2025 betting odds consistently backing I Nerazzurri to triumph, despite the fact they have yet to break clear of the pack. Antonio Conte’s Napoli have refused to go away, and they have a home game against Torino to play on Sunday night. Anything other than an Inter win in the afternoon would give I Partenopei a huge boost, and to take the initiative with just four games remaining would be a big moment.

Inter looked terribly jaded in their Coppa Italia clash with Milan. I Rossoneri have bossed their city rivals all season, and once Luka Jovic had given them an early lead, AC Milan coasted to victory. Jovic scored a second just after the halftime break, and the game petered out to a comfortable win, made even more painful for Inter when Tijjani Reijnders scored a third with just five minutes to play.

Lautaro Martinez has netted 12 goals for Inter in the current Serie A campaign
Lautaro Martinez has been instrumental for Inter Milan

An Easter trip to Bologna was not exactly on Inter’s wishlist after a gruelling Champions League win over FC Bayern, and they were desperately holding on until Riccardo Orsolini scored a winner in injury time. And now, after falling in the Coppa Milan derby, I Nerazzurri need to find a second wind to avoid their season drifting from a treble-chasing dream to a fight for even one piece of silverware.

A win is imperative against Roma and Inter have the firepower to make it happen. Marcus Thuram with 14 goals and Lautaro Martinez with 12 will get service from Federico Dimarco, who has seven assists and Nicolo Barella, who has made six. The challenge for Inzaghi is to get his players ready with just three days to work with.

Roman discipline has reaped rewards

AS Roma have had a week to prepare and, since the return of Claudio Ranieri as manager, they have been prepared superbly and turned into a team which makes the best of their abilities to earn points. And an impressive set of Serie A 2025 results has lifted I Giallorossi to the brink of European qualification.

Ranieri has concentrated on making his team hard to beat, and the past five games show how that is reaping returns, with 1-0 wins over Cagliari, Lecce, and Hellas Verona and 1-1 draws in the recent Rome Derby with Lazio, and another Europe-chasing side, Juventus.

Roma have conceded just 32 goals this season, but they’ve only scored a modest 47, spearheaded by Artem Dovbyk, who has scored 11 goals. There isn’t a particularly bright creative spark in the side. Paulo Dybala has the most assists with three, but Roma will make life difficult for Inter Milan, and that is all that Ranieri asks in his pursuit of a top six place.

History

Inter Milan have won 36 of the last 82 meetings with Roma, while I Giallorossi have picked up 21 wins and there have been 25 draws. And Inter have won the last four encounters.

In terms of recent form, Inter have two wins, two draws, and two defeats from the last six, while Roma have won three of the last six games, with two draws and one defeat.

Inter have won 12, drawn three and lost one at home this season, but Roma have been stubborn on their travels, with just four away defeats, five wins, and seven draws

Betting Tip

Inter are at SBOTOP odds of 1.76 to win this huge clash with Roma at 3.97, and the draw is priced at 3.26. Inzaghi’s men are under pressure to get back to winning ways, but they have been showing signs of fatigue, fighting on three fronts until Wednesday. And Roma are a sticky customer who will make Inter fight for every ball. I can see a tight game with a couple of goals or so and, if it is anything other than an Inter win, the advantage will turn to Naples.
